Explain an interesting case, using concepts (sexuality, racism, Essay

Explain an interesting case, using concepts (sexuality, racism, consumerism, patriotism) - Essay Example In its broad perspective, the concept of racism encompasses practices and ideologies that aim to justify the unequal privileges among people of different racial backgrounds. As a socio-economic ideology and order, consumerism promotes the acquisition of services and goods in a way that is ever increasing. The cultural attachment to a persons homeland and the devotion to their country describe the concept of patriotism. However, the application of the notion varies with geography, political ideology and context. Much literature has been written to explain the connection between these various concepts. Sexuality in the modern society has taken a different direction and has become a different concept in which pornography and exposure of ones privacy are permissible acts. Paris Hilton is described as a highly sexualised, narcissistic, and spoiled person who goes after nothing else than fame. However, what connects sexuality to Pornography and the influence of the modern technology? Undoubtedly, the concept of sexuality has been abused. The past is not anything pleasing to Paris. Like many other people in the American history, Paris wanted to become somebody else in the present times (Gwynne and Müller 21). Sexuality was taking a different direction in the modern times relative to its ancient conceptualization. Probably, modernity and technology can bear the blame for such dramatic changes. Paris’ privileged position in the hereditary aristocracy in America is contrasted with the tension that emanates from her celebrity status. Wealth is said to influence the articulation of a persons attainment of individuality in a given culture rather than being the distinction between stars and the other society members. Just like a celebrity, sexuality is about image. The identity of celebrities that is at times unattainable and inherited but nevertheless admired for imitation and acquisition. Sexuality in the modern

Activity or Working Capital Efficiency Ratios Term Paper

Activity or Working Capital Efficiency Ratios - Term Paper Example Activity ratios are operating efficiency measures, which determine the ability of a company to maximize its output given a certain level of resources. These ratios significantly gauge the asset, investment, and cost management performance of the business entity. Ratios under this category are inventory, creditors’ and debtors’ ratio. The inventory ratio measures the number of days the inventories stay in the company’s distribution center or warehouses. The debtors’ ratio reveals the efficiency of a business organization in collecting its account receivables while creditors’ ratio shows the number of days the company is able to pay its suppliers. Lower numbers are typically preferred in this ratio classification as they signify speed and efficiency of the business organization in dealing with its different transactions.             Appendix 3 shows the working capital efficiency of HR Owen Plc and Antonov Plc. It should be noted that in general, HR Owen is able to boost its efficiency as indicated from the improvement of its inventory and trade creditor ratio. The company is able to reduce the number of days the stocks sit on its warehouse from 84 to 65. HR Owen is also more responsible for its debts it is able to pay its trade creditors in just 12 days. However, HR Owen should still concentrate on its efforts of collecting its receivables from customers. The company reports that it became relatively slower I collecting receivables by three days compared to the 12 days recorded in 2004. The performance of Astronov is again inferior to HR Owen evidenced by its higher debtor’s ratio. The other ratios cannot be computed as the company does not record revenue and cost of sales for the periods considered. Liquidity or solvency ratios are used as measures of the company’s ability to finance its short-term obligations by its cash and near-cash items. Included in these ratios are the current and acid test or quick ratios. Current ratio expresses the â€Å"working capital’ relationship of current assets available to meet the company’s current obligations.†

This is very common that the poor countries often have the failures in the clean water supply and also availability of the non-adulterated food (Sillivan, 1998). A Country Split in Half :: essays research papers

There has never been an issue which caused more disputes and conflicts within our country, than abortion. We can all agree that abortion is an incredibly complex issue. The opinion of the American people is also a lot more complex than â€Å"pro life† or â€Å"pro choice†. According to one poll that was conducted by a Christian organization, seventy-five percent of Americans believe in â€Å"pro life† theory. According to another poll, which was conducted by a state medical board, concluded that the majority of Americans believe in a â€Å"pro choice† ideology. Who do we believe? There seems to be an obvious difference in the definition of the terms. I suppose it is possible to create unanimous definition of both terms, which will be approved by both sides, but until then our country will continue to fight a never-ending battle. I also believe that we would not have to fight over this issue if everybody fully understood the indisputable consequences, whic h would be caused by a ban on abortion.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Abortion right is the most controversial issue among women. I find it disturbing that some women advocate a ban without considering the consequences. By advocating a ban on abortion women deprive themselves of some of the fundamental rights of our political system. The freedom to make individual choices and decisions should be protected at all times. If people understood this principle, we probably would not be in the situation that we are in today. Most Americans would not want the government to interfere in their personal lives but a â€Å"pro life† decision will do just that.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Banning abortion will not solve this issue because we will be left with undeniable negatives, which will make the problem even worse than it is now. There will always be a controversy about abortion for as long as it exists. Even if we ban abortion, we will be left with such undeniable negatives as rape, economic inequality and illegal abortions. Today there are hundreds of thousands of children in foster homes partly because abortion was not available to their parents. According to one government study, unwanted number of children will more than triple thus flooding foster homes all over the country. Rich women will have an opportunity to obtain abortion in foreign countries that do not consider it to be a crime, while the poor will be left with a baby, which may not be loved or appreciated.

Causes of Happiness

Happiness is an emotional or affective state that can be individual or shared with other people. Each person has own definition of happiness. For example, some people think that happiness comes from having a lot of money, and some think that happiness can come from simple things such having a friend.Happiness can affect your health, the people around you, and it can make you have a positive life. There are three causes of happiness such as being successful, eating chocolate, and being optimistic. The first cause of happiness is being successful.Successful life can lead to happiness. For instance, if you are a successful student, you are going to be happy. That is because you are going to feel accomplished which is one of the reasons that lead to happiness. Being successful could also mean having good relationships with other. In other words, if you show good manners everywhere you go, you will make people like to have a friendship with you. As a result, you are going to have a relati onship with your friends, and friends can be one of the reasons that lead to happiness. The second cause of happiness is eating chocolate.Eating chocolate can make you be happy. For instance, researcher have found that chocolate has the property of increasing levels of some hormones. These hormones can cause feelings of happiness and well being. Also, the researchers found that eating 40 grams of dark chocolate every day for two weeks can reduce the stress. In other words, the levels of stress hormones will be reduced which can make you feel happy. The third cause of happiness is being optimistic. Optimism is one of the reasons that lead to happiness. Optimism is a hopefulness and confidence that things will work out. Also, it can help us to move from the past and not fear the future. If you are a pessimist, you are going to think that things will not work out. As a result, the pessimist can lead to less happiness and make you have sadness in your life.In conclusion, it seems that we have three causes of happiness such being optimistic, eating chocolate and being successful. Happiness is very important to our life because it can make our life meaningful. It can affect our life and the people around us, so people have to be happy and optimistic in order to have a comfortable life.

Importance of Space Exploration

Space exploration is the discovery and exploration of outer space by means of space technology. [1] Physical exploration of space is conducted both by human spaceflights and by robotic spacecraft. While the observation of objects in space, known as astronomy, predates reliable recorded history, it was the development of large and relatively efficient rockets during the early 20th century that allowed physical space exploration to become a reality. Common rationales for exploring space include advancing scientific research, uniting different nations, ensuring the future survival of humanity and developing military and strategic advantages against other countries. Various criticisms of space exploration are sometimes made. The Importance of Space Exploration Outer space is the provider of an endless source of questions for scientists. Its enormous proportions are seemingly endless and interesting, and the knowledge garnered on the subject is very commonly well received by the supporting public. Nowadays in a time where economic recession is threatening to cut the funding necessary for space travel, how can we justify it? On the positive side of things, space exploration helps scientists answer a lot of earths' questions. That is a definite pro. Space exploration has proven immensely helpful in determining the theories of where earth came from, like the Big Bang. It also helped scientists single out what elements need to be present for an environment to sustain life. This can prove invaluable, especially if humans do end up completely destroying earth. We need that knowledge in order to find a new planet, right? Hopefully it won't come to that. Space explorations' biggest pro is that it has given scientists content and examples to compare our earth to. This makes it easier to answer questions that would prove to be almost undecipherable otherwise, without thousands if not millions of years of study. Also, the invention of technology used in space exploration was essential for the advancement and development of many helpful technologies widely used today. In other words, without space exploration we would know a lot less. Now, on the other side of the argument, a con of space exploration is that while being focused on the far reaches of the galaxy scientists neglect what we should be studying right here on earth. Oceans make up the largest percentage of our planet yet we know less about the deep sea than we do about stars thousands of miles away. Space exploration has produced technology which can take humans to the inhospitable vacuum on the moon, yet there is not too much thought or effort going into exploring the deepest sea trenches, even though there is now proof that life exists down there. All this fascination and funding going to finding life in outer space while the actual life on the darkest corners of our own planet goes unstudied. Space exploration is also responsible for producing thousands of jobs. There are people needed for all sorts of tasks involving the complicated process of exploring the galaxies. Of course, those jobs would probably exist too if the preferred field of exploration were to be the oceans. This brings about the money issue, which might be its biggest con. Space exploration and all its technological advances come at a very high price. However, it was money well spent until now that government is undergoing major budget cuts to abate financial crisis. Which is more important, knowledge or health care? This is unarguably a big concern. When weighing the pros and cons of space exploration, it is all a matter of relativity. Science should pay more attention to our own planet before focusing on others, but it is undeniably a fact that focusing on those others through space exploration has helped us understand earth a whole lot better.
